ChargePilot Installer
Streamlining the workflow for electricians to set up electric charging stations at new sites. The installer would impact continued savings of €553,000 over three years.

Overview
Due to a complex process, electricians cannot independently set up electric charging stations. This inefficient process burdened the implementation team, leading to increased workload and slower deployment times.
My team and I built a responsive web app that simplified the installation process for electricians. The app eliminated the need for manual paperwork and streamlined communication with the implementation team, reducing installation time and improving overall efficiency.
My Responsibilities
-
Brainstorming and ideation with internal stakeholders.
-
Developing technical documentation to support developers, covering topics such as error handling, translations, mandatory fields, and input field values.
-
Conduct usability testing sessions with core users.

Research
A Key Highlight of this project was my opportunity to accompany the Implement team and electricians during 6 site commissioning.
Major Problems
Incomplete installation protocol (Paperwork)
-
Due to complex forms, electricians often fail to fully or accurately complete installation protocols.
Lack of Automation and Synchronization
-
There was no system in place and no synchronization between existing applications
No status visibility
-
Limited visibility into the status of controllers caused delays and miscommunication during setups.
Improper planning
-
Electricians often arrived unprepared for commissioning and frequently required assistance from the Implement team, leading to delays.
Problem Statement
The traditional process of installing charging stations lacks efficiency and scalability. Electricians often struggle to set up charging stations independently due to complex procedures and insufficient real-time information.
Manual data entry into the ChargePilot Admin UI is time-consuming and error-prone. These inefficiencies lead to delays, increased costs, and challenges in scaling operations effectively.
The Benefits
By empowering electricians to set up sites independently, we streamlined operations and significantly reduced costs, aligning with our business goals.
2024
Sites: 1,600
Cost per site setup: €700
Potential cost savings: €70/site
€112,000
2025
Sites: 2,500
Cost per site setup: €700
Potential cost savings: €70/site
€175,000
2026
Sites: 3,800
Cost per site setup: €700
Potential cost savings: €70/site
€266,000
Potentially saving over €553,000 three years 🎉
Brainstorming to define Product Goal
I facilitated collaborative sessions with internal (The Implement Team) and external (Electricians) stakeholders to define the optimal user experience for electricians to install charging stations independently.

Refinement 1

Pain points
-
Due to technical constraints, the Implement team had to create the site in the admin panel.
-
Electricians have to go through 6 steps to complete the process in the installer.
Refinement 2

Solutions
-
The backend team found a technical solution to help electricians start setting up sites themselves.
-
Collaborating extensively with internal stakeholders reduced the setup steps from six to four.
Usability Testing Round #1 with wireframes
-
Moderated interviews - 5 electricians and 3 implement users
-
Language - German and English

Key Insights
1. Complicated input fields
2. Complex navigation
3. Dependency on controller status
4. No data sync between different devices
5. Cluttered User Interface
6. Missing accountability

Usability Testing #2 & #3
During 3 usability tests, I asked questions that answer a fundamental question: does this tool actually help electricians set up sites faster? And if not, why?
1. Responsive Behaviour

2. Unique Charging Station ID
Users were able to add the same Charging Station ID multiple times, which caused a faulty setup. Each charger has a unique ID.

3. Link to important documentation
With the help of Appcues launch pad, all the configuration manuals can be linked in the menu.

4. Delete Functionality
Adding duplicate and delete interaction in the site setup for charging stations to make bigger setups more easier.

Next Steps
-
Implement video tutorials for smoother onboarding.
-
Enable electricians to add multiple charging stations simultaneously.
-
Allow guest electricians to set up sites without creating an account.
